Save me from the Rainbow

The Rainbow nation-

An ideal in pursuit to silence and dehumanize the struggle of black folk.

Save me from the rainbow nation

Because it is just white light that doesn’t illuminate my reality and pain

Because under this rainbow, the sun only shines on white faces and my blackness remains in dark corners

It remains in storms of oppression and silence

The rainbow nation ideal is a white canvas painted with black blood and meant to give glory to the elite and white

The rainbow nation ideal tells me I am born free

How am I free when doors of education are being shut to my face and I can’t access what Pieter is getting

Save me from the rainbow nation because it claims we’re equal yet the pool is too deep for me to swim among white fish

Save me from the misleading rhetoric of the rainbow nation

Because it’s still storming in Soweto

It’s storming in Alexandra, Mtata and Mamelodi and all places where black folk live in extreme poverty

It’s still storming because the Rainbow Nation has not fed us

We are hungry for freedom in our homes and our minds

We are hungry for the nurturing food of Hani and Biko that heals and liberates the soul

We are hungry for the doors of educations to be opened in full swing not in half-mast like when our heroes have died

Save me from the Rainbow Nation

Because my blackness still reeks dangers in the eyes of white people

Save me from the Rainbow Nation

Because voices of my people are still silenced with violence

Save me from the Rianbow Nation

Because Afrikaans still is the medium of instruction and learning yet Hector Peterson’s blood was shed of this

Save me from the Rainbow Nation

Because I am still told that I “don’t speak right” when I bite my tongue to speak English

Please educate and enlighten me because we still have to applaud you for speaking broken Zulu but my broken English is a problem

Please, Sirs, save me from the rainbow nation

Because it just white light and that is not right

Save me from the rainbow nation because it is corrupt

Save me from the rainbow nation because it is costing me some sleep

It is costing me my future

Because I sleep under desks in libraries yet my white peers drive in Ferraris

Yet I am told I am born free

Save me from the rainbow nation, it will kill me like it has killed many

Save me from the dark powers of the rainbow nation

Deliver my dark soul me from the Rainbow
